MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study was conducted in accordance with the ethical principles set out in the Declaration of Helsinki.

The study was approved by the institutional review board of the University of São Paulo (protocol number: 13/14).

STUDY DESIGN AND RESULTS

The cohort included all patients whose baseline characteristics and creatinine clearance were not available for analysis.

The demographic characteristics and baseline characteristics of the patients are shown in Table 1.

A total of 5,942 patients were included in the study. The mean creatinine clearance was 15 to 20 mL/min/1.73 m2 (IQR 10 to 30 mL/min/1.73 m2). Of the 5,942 patients, 12,849 (76.1%) were treated with Bactrim DS and 14,063 (73.2%) were treated with a comparator. The median age at the start of the study was 53.5 years [range: 34 to 83 years].

The most common adverse drug reactions (≥10%) were diarrhoea (n = 1,062), flatulence (n = 1,063), abdominal pain (n = 1,063), urinary frequency (n = 1,063), respiratory distress (n = 1,063), dizziness (n = 1,062), and headache (n = 1,061).

The proportion of patients with ADRs was similar to that of the general population.
